After the rains…

…an update from Rukgala

The last month, with the impact of Cyclone Ditwah, has of course been a really damaging and in some cases devastating time for many families and businesses in Sri Lanka.

We have been very fortunate at Rukgala to avoid any real impact other than some minor power interruptions during the storm itself, and operations are now fully ‘as normal’.

We do, of course, understand the concerns of guests heading to Ruk so have set up this page to share information on how things are here now.

Access and transport

The only significant disruption now is on the Colombo-Kandy train line which remains closed for the foreseeable future.

The main road routes from Colombo to Kandy (and on to Digana) have no issues and journey times would be as normal.

As ever, we are very happy to assist in arranging good vehicles and drivers should you wish.

Life at Ruk

As above, being slightly ‘at the end of the line’ does mean we’re liable to power cuts and we had a few in the days following the storm. Things are now back to normal, however, and life at Ruk can be enjoyed as we always planned it.

Current weather

November and December are typically the months with most rain for Rukgala and this year’s (absolutely) no exception. Right now (late December) we are still experiencing som rainy days but we’re in a more standard pattern of sunny mornings and afternoon showers.

It’s the rains at this time of year that fill the Reservoir and so one of the best things about visiting right now is gorgeous mornings paddles as the mist lifts off the lake.

With the land rising up from the lakeside to a much higher spot at the ‘hotel’ we have never had, and won’t ever have, any flooding concerns at Rukgala.
